In 1939, construction workers and archaeologists excavating the grottoes beneath St. Peter’s Basilica stumbled upon a necropolis that held a number of stone coffins. One of the coffins held an inscription that indicated that St. Peter himself had been buried within. The bones were placed inside an unassuming shoe box and then recovered by the Vatican who kept them secured and away from close scrutiny.
