During the 1960s and ’70s, the world’s two largest superpowers vied to be the first to put a human on the surface of our closest planetary neighbor, the moon. Both the United States and the Soviet Union spent an immense amount of manpower and resources in order to study and map the lunar surface in preparation for this massive endeavor. NASA’s Apollo missions, from 1969-1972, put a total of 12 people on the moon.
